I totally agree with the above. My wife, legally blind, has her left leg removed, below the knee. It isn't likely that her "off" eye will "turn on" again. Also, it isn't likely her amputated leg will ever--EVER--grow back. She too Needs Metro Access! The every three year 'plan' by WMATA Metro Access, for this type of disibility is well, silly.

We're looking at history repeating itself (again) this month on the 19th, when WMATA will hold a "Discussion" with the "Accessibility Advisory Council" at Metro's HQ, to tell everyone what they're going to do about tightening eligibility even more in a bid to cut costs.

If you look through our archives, WMATA has been tightening and closing down the eligibility criteria on a regular basis for those same claimed reasons - claiming it's in response to a major jump in ridership numbers and costs of the service.

We've already addressed WMATA's logic on the topic once, at <a href="http://www.dcparatransit.info/articles/the-devil-is-in-the-numbers/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.dcparatransit.info/articles/the-devil-...</a> - we're going to have to do so again.

You raise a very good point, and one I think has other ramifications WMATA should be looking at - I feel a new post coming up.

Firstly, why would Metro have a meeting in DC for the elderly and persons with disablilties when they can hardly get around with Metro Access. There elderly and persons with disabilities that have disabilites that will not heal, it is a permanent disablility and that is not going to change. You can't cure brain damage, cerebal palsy, blindness, etc. Way can't these individuals get a permanent cerification from the doctor so they do have to be pentalized the rest of their life for something they can't control, I'm sure if they could they would, who would choose a life of disability and pain.
That is just one sided and unfair. It's time to think long and hard about the services that you "try" to provide. Bring the meeting to the people, don't make the people come to you if you really care. Maybe if no one shows up then you will think everything is ok and there are no problems --- WRONG!!!!!!!!! It's time to get up with the age and be more progressive and sensitive to the real needs of the public.
